Dr. Al-Kamil and Dr. Zhao carried out research into consumer psychology. They investigated whether supermarket shoppers are more likely to purchase a household detergent when it is presented in green packaging compared to standard grey packaging. They used an opportunity sample of 30 participants for each condition. Each participant encountered either the green-packaged product or the standard grey-packaged product on a shelf, and the researchers recorded whether the participant chose to purchase the item or did not purchase it.
Table 1 shows the number of participants who purchased or did not purchase in each condition.
| Green Packaging | Standard Grey Packaging | |
|---|---|---|
| Number of participants who purchased | 22 | 11 |
| Number of participants who did not purchase | 8 | 19 |
