Researchers wanted to investigate how long consumers spent looking at a new eco-friendly product label before deciding whether to make a purchase. The researchers wanted to see whether consumers made an almost instantaneous decision to purchase, as suggested by previous research into impulse buying.
They collected data from 200 participants who were observed while shopping in a mock supermarket environment. The researchers tracked how long, in seconds, each participant spent looking at the product label before either placing the product in their basket or moving away.
The time taken to make a purchase decision was split into four categories:
| Time taken to reach purchase decision | Percentage (%) of shoppers in this time period |
|---|---|
| Under 2 seconds | 12 |
| 2 to 10 seconds | 28 |
| 10 to 30 seconds | 40 |
| More than 30 seconds | 20 |
Calculate the ratio of those shoppers who made their decision in under 2 seconds to those shoppers who made their decision in more than 30 seconds.
You must express the ratio to the lowest whole numbers.
