Auditory backdrop study

Different acoustic environments can influence how well we concentrate. A natural soundscape might enhance focus and reduce stress, whereas an active office environment with background chatter can be distracting. Some people prefer complete silence, while others find white noise helpful.

Researchers wanted to investigate how different types of auditory backdrops affect working memory performance. They recruited 180 university library visitors, with an age range of 18–65 years old, including 90 male and 90 female participants.

The researchers asked participants to complete a series of short reading comprehension tests while listening to different audio tracks through headphones. Across the trials, the auditory background was manipulated to be either low-level white noise, woodland nature sounds, office ambient chatter, or absolute silence. Throughout the study, the researchers used six different text passages of equal difficulty, randomized across conditions to prevent order effects. After completing each reading comprehension task, the researchers recorded the participant's comprehension score, which was marked out of 20.
