Elena and Marcus have carried out research into helping behavior as part of their A level Psychology course. They investigated whether members of the public are more likely to help an elderly person or a young person who has dropped a folder of papers. They used an opportunity sample of 20 participants for each condition. Each participant encountered either an elderly confederate or a young confederate dropping their papers in a high street, and the researchers recorded whether the participant helped pick up the papers or did not help.
Table 1 shows the number of participants who helped or did not help in each condition.
