Approximately 850 participants were recruited by researchers visiting a national Science Festival to investigate spatial navigation and ambient stress. The researchers used a cross-sectional design, grouping participants based on their weekly physical activity levels.
To measure spatial navigation performance, participants completed a highly standardized task on a virtual reality (VR) headset where they had to navigate through a simulated maze to locate 15 distinct target objects. Throughout the task, they were exposed to either a high-frequency intermittent beep or a low-frequency continuous hum as a stress cue, triggered at predetermined intervals.
