Marcus conducted a field experiment to investigate accent prestige and helpfulness. Two different confederates—one speaking with a strong regional accent and another speaking with Received Pronunciation (RP)—asked passersby on a busy high street for directions. He recorded how many people gave detailed directions or refused/offered minimal help. His findings are summarized in Table 1.

Table 1: Helpfulness shown towards confederates with different accents

Regional AccentReceived Pronunciation (RP)
Number of passersby who gave detailed directions616
Number of passersby who refused/gave minimal help144

Explain one improvement that could be made to the experimental design used in Marcus's research.
