Question 72

Shift-Worker Cognitive Performance Study

Researchers wanted to investigate the efficacy of different alertness strategies on the spatial working memory of night-shift staff.

In demanding clinical environments, staff often rely on different methods to combat fatigue. The researchers wanted to compare the effects of a planned 20-minute micro-nap against the consumption of a standard 250 ml caffeinated energy drink on spatial working memory.

A sample of 60 registered night-shift nurses was recruited from a large metropolitan hospital.

The participants were allocated to one of two conditions:

  • Group 1 – Planned 20-minute micro-nap in a quiet room (N=30N=30N=30)
  • Group 2 – Consumption of a 250 ml caffeinated energy drink (N=30N=30N=30)

Following their designated 20-minute intervention, all participants completed a standardised Corsi block-tapping task to assess their spatial working memory capacity.

Describe how the researchers could have used a stratified sampling technique to recruit the 60 registered nurses.
