Question 270

The 'Eco-Warrior' Study

Approximately 650 participants were recruited by researchers visiting a public sustainability expo to investigate pro-environmental conservation behaviour and conservation frequency. The researchers used a cross-sectional design. The participants' willingness to conserve resources and self-reported recycling actions were measured, and their results were grouped into occupational categories.

To measure conservation willingness, participants wore a virtual reality (VR) headset and navigated a simulated neighborhood where they had to decide whether to pick up littered bottles or turn off running water taps in different virtual scenarios. Participants were told to choose either 'intervene' or 'ignore' by clicking a hand controller. The researchers expected the most environmentally conscious individuals to make intervention decisions the quickest and to perform the maximum number of virtual interventions.

To measure real-world conservation frequency, participants were asked to self-report how many hours they had spent actively recycling, composting, or sorting waste in the past 7 days.

Identify and explain one weakness of the 'Eco-Warrior' study in terms of validity.
