The Elite Academy Dining Hall Cohesion Study

Researchers wanted to investigate the impact of changing an elite sports academy's dining hall layout on team cohesion and peer support.

They visited a premier national tennis academy that originally used individual dining booths (isolated eating zones) and observed athlete peer interactions. One month later, the academy replaced all booths with large communal bench tables to encourage social integration. The researchers returned to observe interactions again.

Observations were conducted using existing dining hall security cameras and ambient microphones to monitor athlete interactions during meal times.

Two types of behavior were measured:

• Verbal peer support: Recorded by tallying each time an athlete actively offered encouragement or praise during meals.
• Cooperative scheduling: Recorded by using logs from the academy's shared online training calendar to count joint training sessions scheduled between peers.
