Binaural beats and selective attention study description

Researchers wanted to investigate how listening to binaural beats affects selective attention performance. They recruited 60 undergraduate students who were randomly allocated to either a binaural beats audio group (Condition A) or a white noise audio group (Condition B).

At the beginning of the study, all participants completed a practice run of a computerized Flanker task.

During the 20-minute experimental session:

  • Condition A (binaural beats group) listened to a 40 Hz binaural beat track via headphones while completing a 100-trial computerized Flanker task.
  • Condition B (control group) listened to a continuous white noise track via headphones while completing the same 100-trial computerized Flanker task.

The researchers recorded the number of errors made by each participant on the Flanker task (expressed as a count out of 100).

State a fully operationalised directional (one-tailed) experimental hypothesis for this study.
