Question 117

A community centre is considering opening a supervised study space for local teenagers on weekday evenings. It has collected the following information from a survey of 120 students.

Survey responseNumber of students
Have no quiet place to study at home68
Would use a weekday study space at least once a week84
Could arrive at the centre by 4:30 p.m.72
Have caring or other responsibilities after school28
Would need to travel by bus to reach the centre36

The proposed study space would be open from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays to Thursdays. It would provide desks, reliable internet access, reference books and quiet areas. An adult supervisor would be present. Students would use it free of charge, but the centre would need to pay for heating, equipment and supervision.

Article: A Place to Study After School

Write an article for your local newspaper arguing whether or not the community centre should open the study space.

Use the survey information in your article. You should:

  • describe what the proposed study space would offer
  • explain what the survey suggests about students’ needs
  • evaluate whether opening it would benefit the wider community

You should reach a clear recommendation.
