Researchers wanted to investigate how quickly youth academy football coaches assess a triallist's tactical intelligence during an open trial match. The researchers wanted to see whether coaches made an almost instant, potentially biased judgment (in under 3 minutes) about a player's footballing IQ, rather than relying on sustained observation.
They collected data from 90 trial matches where coaches watched new academy triallists. The researchers asked the coaches to retrospectively estimate how long it took them, in minutes, to make their initial assessment of each player's tactical intelligence.

The coaches were fully briefed on the specific aim of the study beforehand (to investigate if experienced coaches make snap, superficial judgments of tactical intelligence within the first few minutes) and gave their written consent for their data to be compiled and published.
