Spaced retrieval practice is an active recall technique where intervals of time are increased between subsequent reviews of study material.
Researchers wanted to see how daily spaced retrieval practice using a mobile app affected foreign vocabulary learning. They recruited 80 introductory Spanish language learners who were randomly allocated to either the spaced retrieval app group (Condition 1) or the traditional paper list study group (Condition 2).
