Flashcard App versus Social Media Study

Researchers wanted to investigate the impact of different digital activities on vocabulary retention.

The researchers noticed that students frequently switch between using educational apps and passively browsing social media. They wanted to compare how these activities affected short-term retention of foreign language vocabulary.

45 undergraduate psychology students from a UK university were recruited for the study. Participants were required to attend a brief training session on 50 Swedish nouns.

The participants were split into two groups:

  • Group A – Active retrieval practice using a digital flashcard app (N=23N=23N=23)
  • Group B – Passive browsing on a social media platform (N=22N=22N=22)

Following their assigned 15-minute activity, participants completed a distraction task consisting of basic arithmetic puzzles to clear working memory. They were then tested on their translation of the 50 Swedish nouns.

Describe how the researchers could have used a stratified sampling technique to recruit the 45 undergraduate participants.
