Iron reacts with chlorine gas to form an iron chloride. Depending on the reaction conditions, iron can form either iron(II) chloride or iron(III) chloride.

Two possible balanced equations for this reaction are:

  • Equation 1: Fe+Cl2→FeCl2\text{Fe} + \text{Cl}_2 \rightarrow \text{FeCl}_2Fe+Cl2​→FeCl2​
  • Equation 2: 2Fe+3Cl2→2FeCl32\text{Fe} + 3\text{Cl}_2 \rightarrow 2\text{FeCl}_32Fe+3Cl2​→2FeCl3​

In an experiment, 2.79 g of iron reacted completely with excess chlorine gas to produce 8.115 g of an iron chloride product.
