A cognitive psychologist wanted to investigate whether there was a relationship between working memory capacity (measured via a digit span test) and the time taken to solve a complex three-dimensional spatial maze. Seven adult volunteers were recruited from a university library. Each participant completed the digit span test to obtain a score out of 12, and was then timed while navigating the virtual spatial maze to record their completion time in seconds.
The results of the digit span test and the maze completion times are shown in Table 1.
| Participant number | Digit span score (out of 12) | Maze completion time (seconds) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 8 | 45 |
| 2 | 5 | 72 |
| 3 | 11 | 30 |
| 4 | 6 | 64 |
| 5 | 9 | 41 |
| 6 | 4 | 85 |
| 7 | 7 | 53 |
