Dr Vance conducted an experiment to investigate whether the emotional valence of words affects short-term memory recall.

She split her participants into two groups:

  • Condition X: Participants were given a list of words with high positive emotional valence (e.g., joy, laugh, smile, bright) to recall.
  • Condition Y: Participants were given a list of words with neutral emotional valence (e.g., brick, paper, stove, table) to recall.

Each word list contained 15 words. Each participant only took part in one condition.

The results of Dr Vance's experiment are shown in Table 1.
