Dr Aris conducted a field experiment to investigate whether pedestrians are more likely to obey a directive depending on the authority level of the researcher's attire. He used two conditions: in one, the researcher wore a security guard's uniform, and in the other, they wore smart-casual civilian clothing. Each pedestrian was approached and ordered to pick up a piece of discarded litter, and each participant was tested only once, in one of the two conditions.
| Security Guard Uniform | Smart-Casual Civilian Clothing | |
|---|---|---|
| Obeyed the order | 22 | 9 |
| Disobeyed the order | 6 | 17 |
