Dr Aris investigated the effect of room illumination on working memory capacity. Using a self-selected sampling technique, they recruited 30 undergraduate participants. The participants were randomly allocated to one of two conditions.
In Condition 1, participants had 3 minutes to memorise a list of 20 abstract nouns in a brightly lit room (1000 lux).
In Condition 2, participants had 3 minutes to memorise the same list of 20 abstract nouns in a dimly lit room (50 lux).
Dr Aris recorded the number of nouns correctly recalled by each participant during a 2-minute free-recall test administered immediately afterwards.
State the fully operationalised independent variable (IV) and dependent variable (DV) in Dr Aris's investigation.
