The second ticket
Every Thursday, Ada bought two tickets for the afternoon film. The cashier stopped asking whether her companion would arrive later. Ada placed the second ticket beneath her glove and chose the same pair of seats. One remained empty. This week, a young man hovered at the end of the row, studying his ticket. Ada moved her coat before he had spoken. He sat beside her and whispered that the number on his ticket must be wrong. “No,” she said, passing him the spare. “I left it at the desk for whoever asked.” When the lights dimmed, she put both gloves in her bag.
Explain how the later information changes the reader’s understanding of Ada’s visit to the cinema.
