The water bottles
At the race entrance, volunteers handed every runner a new bottle of water. The banner above them said RUN FOR A CLEANER COAST. I drank half of mine and left it beside the first marker, certain someone would collect it. After the finish, I walked back along the route to find my dropped glove. Bottles lay in the grass, some still sealed. At the stream, one turned slowly against a branch. I picked it up, then another, and used my race number to wrap the sticky caps. When I found my glove, I had no free hand to put it on.
Explain how the narrator’s return along the route develops the passage’s message.
