The drained pool

Without water, the swimming pool looked smaller and much deeper. Its blue tiles climbed towards the windows in straight, unforgiving rows. A whistle lay beside the lifeguard’s chair, and the lane ropes had been coiled into bright heaps. Beth remembered voices striking the roof and coming back louder. Now her footsteps travelled ahead of her, knocking against the bare walls. At the deep end, a dark line marked where the water had once rested. Above it, the starting blocks faced a hollow rectangle. She could not remember the pool ever being so easy to see or so difficult to recognise.

Analyse how the writer uses language to convey the change in the swimming pool. Support your answer with evidence.
