Question 12

The unsigned form

The scholarship form lay between Sam and his father’s appointment card. The interview was in another city on the morning of the operation. His father had drawn a star beside the interview date and said there were plenty of people who could drive him to hospital. Sam rang his aunt, but when she answered he asked about her dog. Later, he packed his best shirt, took it out and hung it on the wardrobe door. The train ticket was refundable until midnight. At eleven fifty, he was still holding his phone, reading the message in which his father had written, “Don’t make your world smaller for me.”

What conflict can you infer Sam is experiencing? Support your answer with evidence.
