The mountain
We reached the summit at noon and found a queue. Each person stepped onto the same rock, lifted both arms and waited for a photograph. Beyond the rock, a cloud opened briefly over a valley of silver streams. Nobody in the queue turned. I kept my camera in its case, feeling briefly superior, until I noticed that I was rehearsing how I would describe my superior silence to everyone at home.
When did the group reach the summit, and what did people wait for?
