The replacement goalkeeper
When the coach announced the team, Isaac clapped for the new goalkeeper before anybody else. He lent the boy his spare gloves and explained which patch of the goalmouth became slippery after rain. During practice, he stayed behind the net to collect missed shots. Each time the boy caught the ball, Isaac called, “Good hands.” When nobody was looking, he pulled the loose strap of his own glove so hard that the stitching snapped. At the end, the coach asked whether he wanted a lift. Isaac said he would walk; he still had a little energy left.
Evaluate how convincingly the writer presents Isaac as hiding his disappointment. Support your judgement with evidence.
