The wrong envelope
I had practised looking pleased for whoever won the photography prize. When my name was called, I forgot the expression entirely. The applause had felt like warm water, and I wanted to remain in it. Then I stood, catching my shoe on the chair leg, and went to the organiser. I told him about the mistake before he could congratulate me again.
