The marked map

Priya’s mother had drawn the route to the new school in blue pen. At breakfast, Priya said she knew the way and left the map beside her plate. She returned for it while her mother was upstairs. At the corner shop, she checked the first turning, then folded the paper into a square small enough to hide in her sleeve. Two pupils in the same uniform walked past. Priya followed at a distance until they turned towards the sports centre. She stopped, opened the map fully and asked the shopkeeper which road led to the main entrance.

What can you infer about Priya’s wish to appear independent? Support your answer with evidence.
