Question 17

A night-time street

Source A: an original resident’s account.

Since the late cafés opened, the street has kept one eye awake. Light spills across the pavement, and there is usually someone stacking chairs when I walk home from work. I no longer hurry past the shuttered shops with my keys pressed between my fingers. I understand that neighbours need sleep, but for me a little ordinary activity has made the journey less lonely.

Source B: an original resident’s account.

From my bedroom, the same street is a radio nobody will switch off. A chair scrapes, a taxi door slams, and another burst of laughter arrives just as I begin to sleep. I do not object to cafés or to people enjoying themselves. I object to the idea that everyone else’s night must end when the last customer decides to go home.

Explain how one language choice in each source conveys the writer’s attitude towards the street at night.
