Investigation into Gender Bias in Recruitment

In a study investigating gender bias in occupational recruitment, a student recruited a sample of 25 human resource managers. Each manager was presented with two virtually identical CVs, with only the gender-associated name changed:

  • CV A featured a traditionally masculine first name.
  • CV B featured a traditionally feminine first name.

The managers were asked to rate the suitability of each candidate for a leadership role on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = completely unsuitable, 10 = highly suitable).

The student wanted to test for a significant difference in the suitability ratings given to CV A compared to CV B. They proposed using a Mann-Whitney U test to analyse the data.

Suggest a more appropriate statistical test of difference for the student to use with this data. Explain two reasons for your choice based on the description of the study.
