Question 1

Study of moral development

In a study of moral development, a psychology student used a group of 7-year-old children. Each child was presented with two short stories.

  • Story A showed a character accidentally breaking five cups while helping to wash the dishes.
  • Story B showed a character intentionally breaking one cup while sneaking a biscuit.

The student asked each child to rate how "naughty" the character was in each story on a scale of 1–5 (where 1 is not naughty at all and 5 is extremely naughty).

The student decided to test for a significant difference between the naughty ratings for the two stories. He proposed using an unrelated t-test to analyse the data.

Suggest a more appropriate statistical test of difference for the student to use with this data. Explain two reasons for your choice based on the description of the study.
