Question 65

An environmental researcher wants to investigate whether a new municipal public-awareness campaign increases water-saving consciousness in domestic households. A sample of 14 households are monitored and their water-conservation practices are scored on a scale from 1 (very poor) to 30 (excellent) both in the week immediately prior to the campaign and in the week immediately following the campaign. The researcher hypothesized that the post-campaign conservation scores would be significantly higher than the pre-campaign scores.

Explain how the data from this investigation could be analysed. Give reasons for your answer. You should refer to the following:

  • descriptive statistics that could be used to represent the data
  • the standard significance level
  • whether the researcher would use a one-tailed or a two-tailed test
  • the appropriate non-parametric statistical test that could be used to analyse the data, with detailed justification.
