It has to be a PDF, and it has to be under 25MB. The two failures we see most are password-protected PDFs and scans that are too big, and both are fixed by re-exporting or printing the file to a new PDF.
Nearly every rejected file is fixed the same way: open it and print it to a new PDF. That strips the password, flattens whatever the scanner did to it and usually makes it a good deal smaller at the same time.
If it is still too big after that, scan again at a lower quality. Around 200 dpi in black and white is plenty for marking, and it is often several times smaller than a colour scan of the same pages. Splitting a long paper into two uploads also works, and you can mark the halves separately.
The message on the failure tells you which stage went wrong, and it is worth reading rather than just retrying. A file we could not read needs a better scan, and no amount of retrying will change that. A general failure is usually temporary and worth one more attempt in a few minutes.
You can upload a paper on its own, and it will still be marked, but you will see a note saying it was marked without one. Adding the mark scheme makes a real difference to accuracy, particularly on method marks and on questions where more than one answer is acceptable, so upload it too when you have it.
How paper marking worksPaper uploads have a weekly allowance, and it is one of the four limits that Plus does not lift. If uploading whole papers is your main use of MathsGenie, Pro is the plan that makes it unlimited.
