OCR GCSE English Literature (J352) is a Level 1/Level 2 qualification regulated by Ofqual, taken by students aged 14–16. It covers a shakespeare play, a 19th-century novel, modern prose or drama from 1914 onwards, poetry from 1789 to the present day, unseen poetry, and comparative and analytical essay writing, with a strong focus on with a strong focus on close textual analysis, personal interpretation, and situating texts within their social and historical context. The course is a single-tier qualification graded 9–1, with first assessment in 2017.

OCR GCSE English Literature builds the skills examiners reward. By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • analyse how writers use language, form and structure to create meaning
  • build an informed, well-evidenced personal response to a text
  • compare poems and extracts across a theme
  • explain the influence of social, historical and literary context
  • quote and reference texts accurately to support an argument
  • analyse unseen poetry and prose extracts under exam conditions
  • write clearly and accurately using subject terminology
  • structure an extended literary essay
  • interpret character, theme and narrative viewpoint
