Cracking is a process used to break down larger, less useful hydrocarbon molecules into smaller, more valuable ones.

Decane, C10H22\text{C}_{10}\text{H}_{22}C10​H22​, can be cracked to produce one molecule of propene, C3H6\text{C}_3\text{H}_6C3​H6​, and one molecule of another alkane, CyH16\text{C}_y\text{H}_{16}Cy​H16​.

C10H22→C3H6+CyH16 \text{C}_{10}\text{H}_{22} \rightarrow \text{C}_3\text{H}_6 + \text{C}_y\text{H}_{16} C10​H22​→C3​H6​+Cy​H16​
