A student sets up the apparatus shown below to investigate the products of combustion when a wax candle is burned.

Experimental setup to collect and test combustion products of a candle. An inverted funnel is held over a candle flame. The stem of the funnel is connected by a delivery tube to Tube 1, which sits inside an empty beaker. A second delivery tube goes from Tube 1 into Tube 2, dipping below the surface of a liquid. A third tube connects the space above the liquid in Tube 2 to a suction pump to draw the combustion gases through the system.

Describe what must be done to, or placed in, Tube 1 and Tube 2 to collect the water and prove that carbon dioxide gas is produced.
