A student set up the apparatus shown in the diagram below to carry out the catalytic cracking of liquid paraffin in the school laboratory.

A horizontal boiling tube contains mineral wool soaked in liquid paraffin at the bottom (closed end), and pieces of broken porcelain catalyst in the middle. The boiling tube is sealed with a rubber bung and a delivery tube. The delivery tube goes down into a trough of water, leading up into an inverted test tube filled with water to collect the bubbles of produced gas. A Bunsen burner is shown heating the broken porcelain catalyst.

Explain how ethene gas is produced from the liquid paraffin using this apparatus.
