Figure 1 shows a fractional distillation column used to separate the hydrocarbons in crude oil into simpler mixtures called fractions.

Moving down from the top to the bottom, the fractions are collected in this order: Liquefied petroleum gas, Petrol, Kerosene, Diesel, Heavy fuel oil, and Bitumen.
