An impure liquid hydrocarbon fuel containing sulfur impurities is burned using the apparatus shown below.

The outlet of the U-tube connects to a test tube (Tube B) containing a pH indicator solution. The entire system is connected to a vacuum pump to draw the gases through.

When the fuel is burned, the following observations are made:

  • the funnel becomes hot to the touch
  • a colourless liquid condenses in Tube A
  • the indicator in Tube B changes colour, showing the presence of an acidic gas

Explain these three observations.
