The research does not support the broad claim that background music always improves revision. Nor does it show that every kind of music inevitably causes harm.
A systematic review published in 202220222022 examined 959595 articles containing 154154154 experiments across memory, language, attention, reasoning and other cognitive domains. Its overall findings were mixed, but an important pattern emerged: background music tended to be detrimental for memory and language-related tasks, particularly when it contained lyrics. Complete silence is not available in every home. The practical goal is to reduce intelligible, unpredictable sound and protect your attention.
