Question 52

The conservatory in August

Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.

By midday, the conservatory had become a cupboard for heat. The glass admitted sunlight with enthusiasm and showed no interest in letting the result escape. Cushions felt warm before anybody sat on them. A newspaper lay open on the table, its pages too still, as though even the headlines had abandoned the effort of being urgent.

I opened both doors. Air moved through slowly, carrying the dry smell of the tomato plants outside. The tiles retained the sun under my bare feet. In the corner, a fly travelled against the window with a persistent, misplaced confidence, ignoring the open doorway a few inches away. I followed its small collisions until watching them began to feel like another form of heat. Everything in the room seemed to be waiting for a change it could not arrange for itself.

Late in the afternoon, a cloud covered the sun. The difference was immediate and almost physical, as if somebody had lifted a hand from the roof. I sat down at last and heard leaves moving beyond the door. The room had not changed its furniture or its purpose. It had simply become possible to occupy again, a reminder that glass can turn a pleasant view into a demanding climate of its own.

Refer to the whole of Source A. Analyse how the writer uses language to create a sense of oppressive heat and subsequent relief. Explain the effects of specific words, phrases and language choices, using evidence from the passage.
