Question 13

The gift shop exit

Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.

The exhibition ended with a room of delicate sketches, each one asking us to look more slowly. Then the exit delivered us into a shop where the same images had acquired prices and handles. A landscape became a mug. A face appeared on a tea towel. The quiet pencil lines now repeated themselves across a stack of notebooks, ready to supervise somebody's shopping list.

I do not object to museums selling things. The postcards were handsome, and I bought one. What unsettled me was the speed of the conversion. Five minutes earlier, the artist's uncertainty had seemed worth attending to: the rubbed-out line, the unfinished corner, the hand trying again. Here the work was complete, portable and available in three sizes. The shop offered the reassuring promise that an experience could be finished by putting it in a bag.

Outside, I took the postcard out and looked at it. Its smallness made some details disappear, but it reminded me of where to look when I returned. That seemed a reasonable job for a postcard. I put it away, hoping I could keep the memory without asking the souvenir to do all the remembering for me.

Refer to the whole of Source A. Analyse how the writer uses language to present the writer’s mixed response to the museum shop. Explain the effects of specific words, phrases and language choices, using evidence from the passage.
