A tour of the recycling depot
Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.
Our class visited the recycling depot on a Wednesday morning. Before entering the sorting area, we put on high-visibility vests and listened to a safety briefing. The guide asked us to remain behind the marked rail throughout the tour. We watched paper move along one conveyor while metal containers travelled on another. The noise meant that the guide used a microphone connected to the headsets we had been given.
In a quieter room, we examined examples of items that people often placed in the wrong bin. A greasy food container was one example. The guide explained why the condition of an item mattered as well as the material it was made from. We could ask questions there, and I asked what happened when a machine stopped. Before boarding the coach, we returned both vests and headsets. I took home a leaflet for our kitchen, where our household's confidence about recycling had usually been greater than its accuracy.
