The early ferry check-in
Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.
Our ferry ticket asked us to arrive forty minutes before departure. We reached the terminal at six twenty with two bicycles and no car. A member of staff directed cyclists to a separate waiting area beside the foot-passenger entrance. I showed the booking on my phone, while my brother kept the bikes upright. The crossing itself would take just under an hour, provided the weather remained settled.
We boarded after the cars. A crew member helped us secure the bicycles to a rail on the lower deck and reminded us to take anything we needed upstairs. I removed my raincoat and camera from a pannier. In the passenger lounge, we chose seats near a window, but mist soon hid most of the view. My brother bought tea while I checked our route from the destination harbour. The bikes would be among the last things unloaded, so we had allowed extra time before the morning train we hoped to catch.
