Making the bird boxes
Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.
At the workshop, each person received pre-cut wooden pieces for one bird box. The instructor asked us to check that we had six pieces before collecting screws from the front table. I worked beside a retired carpenter, who lent me a clamp when my first attempt slipped sideways. We were told not to paint the inside of the boxes. The outside could be treated later with a suitable product, once the wood was dry.
I finished assembling mine just before lunch, but the roof would not lift easily. The instructor showed me where one screw had been driven too far. After loosening it slightly, I could open the roof for cleaning without removing it altogether. We wrote our names underneath and left the boxes on a shelf for collection the following weekend. I had hoped to carry mine home that day, but the delay gave me time to choose a suitable position in the garden rather than simply use the nearest tree.
