Packing the emergency display
Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.
The fire station invited our youth group to prepare a display about household emergency plans. We were given a table near the entrance for Saturday's open day. Our poster reminded visitors to agree a meeting place outside and know how to leave each room safely. A firefighter checked every sentence before we printed it, changing two phrases that could have been misunderstood.
I packed the posters, tape and leaflets on Friday night, then realised the folding stand was still at school. Our group leader collected it the next morning. At the open day, we did not demonstrate any equipment ourselves; firefighters handled that part. My job was to explain the poster and direct detailed questions to them. By lunchtime we had given out nearly all the leaflets. We kept one clean copy for the group's scrapbook and wrote down suggestions for making next year's display easier for younger children to read.
