Question 22

The portrait sitting

Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.

The art students asked for volunteers to sit for portraits, and I booked a session on Tuesday afternoon. The studio was above a furniture shop. I was given a chair beside a tall window and asked to keep my feet on two marks taped to the floor. There were five students, each viewing me from a different angle. Nobody expected me to remain completely still for the whole afternoon; a bell announced a short break every twenty minutes.

During the first break I walked around to look at the drawings. One student had concentrated on the folds in my jacket, while another had drawn almost nothing except my face. I had assumed all five pictures would be similar. By the final break I understood how much the artist's position and choices could change the result. The tutor offered me a photograph of one completed drawing, rather than the original. I chose the one with the carefully drawn jacket, which made an ordinary garment look worth noticing.

Refer to the whole of Source A. Choose the four true statements below. Write their four letters in the answer box. Choose no more than four; if more are given, only the first four distinct letters will be marked.
