The station flower boxes
Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.
The station volunteers meet on the first Tuesday of each month to look after the platform flower boxes. I joined them in June, bringing gloves but no tools. The group kept trowels and watering cans in a locked cupboard, and the station manager held the key. We worked only on the public side of the barrier marked on the platform; anything nearer the track was left to railway staff.
My first job was to remove dead leaves from the boxes beside the waiting room. Then I carried water from the tap near the bicycle stands. The group had chosen plants that could cope with dry conditions, but they still needed attention during hot weeks. At ten, we stopped while a crowded train arrived, keeping our equipment clear of passengers. Before leaving, I wrote my name on the watering rota for the following Wednesday. I had expected one morning of gardening and left with a small regular responsibility.
