Waiting for the mobile library
Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.
The mobile library stops beside our village shop every other Wednesday. I usually arrive a few minutes early with my books in a shopping bag. This week the van was late because roadworks had forced it to take a longer route. The librarian explained the delay as she lowered the step. Inside, a narrow shelf held books that readers had requested in advance, including the guide to local birds I had ordered.
I returned two novels and borrowed the bird guide along with a collection of short stories. My neighbour asked whether large-print books could be ordered, and the librarian showed her how to make a request. We had half an hour before the van needed to leave for the next village. As I stepped down, rain began, and the shopkeeper waved us inside to wait. I read the first page of the bird guide beside a stack of potatoes, discovering that I had confidently given the wrong name to a bird I saw almost every morning.
