The museum audio test
Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.
I joined a small group testing the museum's new audio guide before its public launch. We were each given a handset and a sheet for comments. The first recording described a model fishing boat. I could hear the narration clearly, but the number printed beside the display was difficult to read from my wheelchair. I noted this on the sheet instead of assuming somebody else would mention it.
The next room had a recording with background music. Two people in the group found that the music made the words harder to follow. A member of staff asked us to replay the section and identify the point where the problem began. We spent nearly twenty minutes there. At the end, we returned the handsets to the desk and kept a copy of our comments. The museum offered us free admission for a later visit. I was pleased to be invited back, although I was more interested in whether the awkward number and the loud music would have changed.
