The community oven booking
Source A: an original contemporary non-fiction-style account.
I booked the community kitchen's large oven to bake bread for a fundraising lunch. The booking covered two hours on Saturday morning and included use of the mixing bowls, but ingredients had to be supplied by the baker. I brought flour, yeast and salt in a crate. The kitchen coordinator showed me the oven controls and where to record the temperature checks before leaving me to work.
My first tray held six small loaves. I set a timer instead of relying on the wall clock, which had stopped. While the bread baked, I washed the bowls and wiped the worktop. The second tray needed a few extra minutes, so I telephoned the lunch organiser to say the delivery would be slightly later than planned. I left the kitchen before my booking ended, carrying the loaves in clean boxes. The coordinator inspected the room before returning my deposit. Next time, I decided, I would allow more time between baking and serving.
